DNA electronics in nanotechnology
Posted by Satyajit Das on July 20, 2008
DNA, the blueprint of life, and electronics seem to be two completely
different things but it appears that DNA could offer a solution to many
of the hurdles that need to be overcome in further scaling down
electronic circuits beyond a certain point. The reason why DNA could be
useful in nanotechnology for the design of electric circuits is the
fact that it actually is the best nanowire in existence – it
self-assembles, it self-replicates and it can adopt various states and
conformations. Not surprisingly, performing reliable experiments on a
single oligo-DNA molecule is an extremely delicate task as partly
contradicting research reports demonstrate: Different DNA transport
experiments have shown that DNA may be insulating, semiconducting, or
metallic. Among the numerous factors that could impact the results are
the quality of the DNA-electrode interface, the base pair, the charge
injection into the molecule, or environmental effects such as humidity
or temperature. Researchers have now demonstrated a novel carbon
nanotube-based nanoelectronic platform as proof of concept that single
DNA molecules can be detected. This novel detection technique is based
on change in electrical conductance upon selective hybridization of the
complementary target DNA with the single stranded probe attached to the
system. The single-stranded sequence-specific probe DNA whose ends are
modified with amine is attached between two carbon nanotubes/nanowires
using dielectrophoresis (DEP). This platform can be used for
understanding how electrical charge moves through DNA which could help
researchers understand and perhaps develop a technique for reversing
the damage of DNA done by oxidation and mutation.
One of the potential applications of the present study would be
identification of specific genes based on the hybridization-induced
change in electrical signal. The researchers explain that their current
detection platform could be used in an application for the electrical
detection of several other gene sequences on a single chip, although
such simultaneous detection of several different gene sequences using
an array of nanoelectrodes is a major challenge which currently is
under investigation by the research team.
This platform could also be used in fundamental research studies
understanding the properties of DNA at single molecular level. The
proposed technology has a wide-range application that includes but not
limited to revealing the presence of disease related genes, bacterial
and viral.

SPACE WALKERS REMOVE EXPLOSIVE BOLT FROM RUSSIAN CRAFT
Posted by Satyajit Das on July 14, 2008
Cosmonauts successfully removed an explosive
bolt from a Russian Soyuz spacecraft on Thursday during a spacewalk.Space station commander Sergei Volkov and
flight engineer Oleg Kononenko dealt calmly with the hectic operation outside
the International Space Station (ISS) as first-time spacewalkers, despite early
troubles setting up a Strela hand-powered crane to reach the work site. The removal of the explosive bolt represents
part of a continuing Russian investigation into what caused the two previous Soyuz
missions to go offcourse and undergo ballistic reentries during their return to Earth.Ten of the pyro bolts typically fire to
separate the Soyuz instrument module from the return module. That allows the Soyuz
to point its heat shield downward to protect itself from the heat of reentry. However, a mysteriously delayed separation of
the modules forced the latest three-person Soyuz crew to endure a steep
ballistic reentry and gravitational forces reaching up to 10 times those on
Earth. South Korea’s first spaceflight participant, So-yeon Yi, detailed the experience as “scary” and was afterward for neck and back pain.briefly hospitalizedRussian engineers want to check the pyro
bolts for signs of environmental damage from electromagnetic or plasma forces
around the space station and Soyuz spacecraft. NASA officials are also
interested in the results of the investigation, because the Soyuz will provide
the only access to the space station for a time after the space shuttle retires.

BUZZ LIGHTYEAR IN ORBIT WEBSITE…….
Posted by Satyajit Das on July 8, 2008
NASA the well known name in the space research and has opened up many avenues for kids to develop their outlook on space science and and at the same time to cultivate some thing newout of their mind.NASA has come up with an idea to make the young mass aquainted with its missions and programs through internet…..ie. it has opened a website for only children
(buzz lightyear in orbit website)
This step taken by NASA will make it popular among young minds. In this age of software booms and galopping era of IT sector this step taken by NASA is worth enough for the world and for its furture.Since nowadays more people are heading towards software firms this step can cAreate a research oriented mindset in the youth.
This is a joint venture of NASA and DISNEY,it will also have worksheets for teachers and parents.Elderly people can also be the part of nasa kid’s club.
It mainly contians mission to atlantis

Technology make impossible happen real…..
Posted by Satyajit Das on July 7, 2008
“Necessity is the mother of invention” this age old saying has made man to step into this modern era of technology. The invent of technology though has made the life of man more systemetic at the same time it has percolated its poisonous roots into man’s nature and working habits……it has made man more passive from their forefathers.Man has become a time hungry animal with this technology advancement………….due to lack of time management skills with this modern animal of this tech world……..he has to mess with huge mental stress resulting in his reduction of efficiency.Young mass today are so much relable on this boom that they have become gizmo frecks….there is no such time that they are with out any gadgets.Looking on the brighter part of the boom it has brought speed to our life,it has given a lift to our economy and transction.it has .it has made the age old dream of man to fly in the sky come true, globalisation and liberalisation are the brightest aspect of this boom……it is galloping in many fields and covering more area for increasing the comfort level of man………….
